Dade County was organized in 1841, from
Barry and Polk counties, and named for Francis L. Dade, a pioneer settler. The log cabin home of William Penn on Pennsylvania Prairie provided the location for the first courts of Dade County, but the permanent county seat was to be located within 4 miles of the center of the county.

The first courthouse was built in Greenfield
in 1842. Dozier C. Gill built a second brick 2-story courthouse on the public square in 1850. A third courthouse, completed in 1868 by contractor Francis M. Wilson, was also a 2-story brick building.

Hulston Mill Historical Park is in the growing
Stockton Lake recreational area. Limited development of the park has included moving the historic pre-Civil War Hulston Grist Mill to the site designated for the historic village. The mill and the historic village will serve as focal points in the park.
